My personal testimony on how God and spiritual help gave me the strength and encouragement to quit smoking over 10 years ago.

I was almost hopelessly addicted to smoking cigarettes for a little over 10 years and smoked between 1 to 2 packs per day, and sometimes even more. For over 2 years, I tried to quit smoking but with God's help it finally happened on January 10,1988.

There are different ways to quit and I am sure you will find it when you trust God and make the effort towards that goal. A couple things that helped me quit smoking was that I was in the first place convinced that it was DESTROYING my health, costing me a ton of money, plus many other reasons.

I was so very frustrated, so i decided to seriously prayed about my addiction, asking God to remove this dirty habit yet it did not go away right way. I kept on trying to quit relentlessly. I limited my cigarettes; I used a charcoal filter tip to reduce the nicotine. It was finally when a good friend of mine encouraged me and at the same time, challenged me to quit smoking.

One day went by without smoking and I could almost not believe it. That victory of one day grew to 2 which grew to 3 and then 7 and so forth. Day after day I grew in confidence that maybe God was answering my prayer finally.

I cannot or will not say that quitting smoking was easy, it was not. Yet it was one of the best things I did for my health in my entire life. It has been 21 years now and I do not miss cigarettes at all. I am thankful that I did quit smoking and encourage you to do the same. The video on this page has some very good suggestions for quitting smoking even though I personally do not suggest hypnosis.

From a spiritual standpoint, any habit pertaining to health issues, such as taking drugs, smoking, drinking, sexual immorality, etc., as told in the Bible states, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20) "Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18).

For those who have faith in God and believe in Jesus Christ, forming new habits by being controlled by the Holy Spirit becomes a way of life. It can be done and I encourage you to do the same. Set a date, make a commitment and give it a try. Once I did these things, I was able to quit smoking and I don’t miss cigarettes at all and I am very thankful to God that I quit!

I pray that you can go "24 hours" without a cigarette in doing so you will be on your way in quitting smoking3. The first few days are the hardest, but after that you will gain confidence and will be able to break the habit with God's help.

Sincerely,

Bill Greguska

Do you need more reasons to quit?  Here are a few reminders to consider...

1. There are better ways to spend my money.
2. I would rather be healthy.
3. Having yellow teeth & brown fingers are not attractive.
4. No one wants to kiss an ashtray.
5. Tar belongs on the street, not in my lungs.
6. Coughing is not a cool thing.
7. Smoker's breath is gross.
8. Smoking pollutes the air for others that I care about.
9. Life is more fun when I can breathe.

Closing comments about quitting smoking and other factors that get involved.

Whether you're looking for a way to quit smoking or Christian help for most any other issue, motivational Christian books can be encouraging and informative to help tackle the root reasons for your problems or issues that got you started smoking in the first place and seem to not let you quit at the present time.

Getting the help you need can sometimes be intimidating or even embarrassing, especially if you're dealing with anxiety, depression, or anger that sometimes goes along with quitting smoking.

Life can become very difficult and stressful for many people, sometimes it feels like smoking seems to calm your nerves and is your best friend, but in reality continuing smoking only harms you and will wreck your health or kill you. The addiction to cigarettes have been compared to that of a heroin addiction. Being an ex-smoker, I know how hard it was for me to quit, but I thank God for the few good friends that encouraged me to make it.

If you need support you can certainly talk to your minister, a friend, or even a fellow church member if you attend church, but you may also glean some help from simply writing a journal entries about your feelings and start taking steps to help you relax such as exercising and deep breathing.

It has been said that when you quit smoking there is a chance to gain a few pounds. Honestly those possible few pounds are nothing compared to what your heart has to battle with while you still smoke. Having gum or candy in your mouth and something in your hand will help with the void of the cigarette you were used to for such a long time.

Sometimes, when a person is under much stress or even peer pressure they can turn back to smoking as an outlet. Try to guard this from happening by:

  • Being in touch with your feelings and emotions
  • Ask God to give you the strength and determination to help you quit smoking
  • Eating healthy
  • Sleeping regular hours
  • Exercise a few times a week
  • Reevaluate your calendar and be willing to say no if you tend to over schedule yourself

Fortunately, there are a number of different ways to quit smoking, use some of the suggestions we offer, although you might just try what ever you think would work best for you. Remember it's best just to avoid smoke as much as possible if you can, many people have turned to using a nicotine patch.

Keep in mind that you must continue to seek support from friends and family members, or even a counselor, and trust that God has a better plan for your life as you take on this challenge of quitting smoking with the help of God hopefully once and for all.
