What is the truth about Heaven and Hell
Most Protestants believe that the details of the afterlife throughout the Bible are consistent. That every person has eternal life, and that God has created two places (Heaven and Hell) where people will spend eternity after death and judgment.
One place which is called Heaven: It is a glorious place where there is no pain, disease, depression, etc. People live there in new spiritual bodies, in the presence of Jesus Christ. A place of peace and joy beyond description that waits for those who have put their faith in Jesus Christ.
The other place is called Hell: According to Christians, it is a place where people will be intensely tortured without any hope of relief, for eternity for rejecting Jesus Christ teaching. God will not allow sin that is not dealt with by people properly to be allowed in heaven. Jesus made the way to have our sins dealt with by the example and teaching in his life and later by his death on the cross as a ransom for our sin.
How a destination is determined: Those who have repented of their sins and have trusted Jesus as Lord and Savior are "saved." They will go to heaven. This represents a minority of those North Americans who identify themselves as Christians. Those who have heard the Gospel and have not been saved will be tortured without relief in Hell after they die. Most Christians will share this fate.
Nobody can earn their way to heaven by doing good deeds. Our behavior during our lifetime does not influence in any way God's decision whether we will go to heaven or hell; only our beliefs matter. Hell is, in essence, a punishment for a thought crime; for holding the wrong beliefs about the nature of Jesus.
Good deeds are a natural response to being saved, but have no bearing on our salvation status. Even if a person has been saved, they will not have eternal life in heaven if they engage in certain forbidden activities without later sincerely asking for forgiveness. Of the many such forbidden behaviors that are referred to in the Bible, the one that is commonly mentioned in church is a homosexual act.
Conservative Christians believe that the natural tendency of every human is to reject the Gospel and thus be destined to spend eternity in Hell. However God grants his grace to a small percentage of the human race so that they are receptive to the Christian message. God chooses who will receive this gift using criteria that humans are not aware of.
"Historically, hell has been portrayed in evangelical sermons as fire and brimstone. The most we should say is that hell is a place of unexplainable mystery. The reality is probably far worse than our most vivid imaginations can conjure up. The reality of both heaven and hell are both greater than we can express...While it's very important to teach and preach about the reality of hell, it should be done only with evangelical tears. There is sometimes a kind of gloating that people are broiling in hell. I don't think that honors God or reflects the love of Jesus. We should shed tears over those who are perishing. Sometimes that's been missing...Heavenly happiness offers a better approach to evangelism than how hot it is in hell. We ought to focus on heaven and not lose sight in focusing on what the temperature is in hell. We ought to not lose sight of the alternative, which is eternity with God in heaven."
The video further below is a made up letter from on friend to another. A letter from Hell was written because his best friend never told him how to become a Christian. It makes us all stop to think a minute how important it is to share our faith while we still are alive to avoid a letter like this!
Rudy learned the difference between Heaven and Hell...
(a story with a moral to it)
A man named Rudy was having a talk with the Lord one day and said, 'Lord, I would like to know what Heaven and Hell are like.'
The Lord led Rudy to two doors. He opened one of the doors and Rudy looked in. In the middle of the room was a large round table. In the middle of the table was a large pot of stew, which smelled delicious and made the man very hungry.
The people sitting around the table were very thin and sickly. They appeared to be starving. They were holding spoons with very long handles that were strapped to their arms and each of them found it literally possible to feed themselves the stew, because the handle was longer than their arms, they could not get the spoons back into their mouths. Rudy shuddered at the sight of their misery and suffering.
The Lord said to Rudy, 'You have just seen Hell. They went to the next room and opened the door. It was exactly the same as the first one. There was the large round table with the large pot of stew which also made the man hungry. The people were equipped with the same long-handled spoons, but here the people were well nourished and in a good mood, laughing and talking.
Rudy said to the Lord, 'I don't understand what is going on? 'It is simple,' said the Lord. 'It requires but one skill to keep in mind. You see, they have learned to feed each other. The greedy & self centered think only of themselves.' When Jesus died on the cross, he was thinking of you, we need to learn from the Lord and not only seek after our own wants and desires.
This points directly to the greatest command which is to "Love the Lord with all your heart, and Love your neighbor as yourself."
